My group and I have just finished the last few pages of our book, Dr. Franklin's Island. In these last pages, we learn how Semi, Miranda, and Arnie's journey on the island comes to an end. They go to see their parents after spending some time with a couple of friendly nuns. Semi and the rest decide that the best for them to do is to make up a story about their adventure. They would be safer if people didn't know what actually happened while in Dr. Franklin's custody. The book ended in a nice way, leaving the reader with a few questions left in mind, but happy that everything had worked out for the better. The testing that Dr. Franklin did, soon came undone. Semi was no longer a fish, although she could still breath under water. Through out the book, we met many characters, and encountered many twists and turns, but these last few pages showed the true moral of the story; even when things seem at their worst, like being on stuck on an island with a crazy scientist, things always have a way of working out. Semi, the main character in this novel, changed from being a shy girl to a determined character.

CHAPTER 7.

The two wake up in a hotel room setting with beds, a TV, a living room, a fridge... etc. The two felt clean for once, and they both found clothes for them. Later that day, Dr. Franklin stopped by and explained how things worked. He explained to them that if there was any trouble, they would be back in straitjackets. They would also be under surveillance and could not talk to the other workers there.
On the second day, Dr. Franklin came to do a check-up on both of them. He took blood samples and made them take IQ tests. Other than that, the two tried to enjoy themself as much as possible by playing games, watching films and even doing fashion shows with the clothes they were provided. Before they both would go to sleep, they would make notches on the wall so that they could keep track of the days.
One day, they realized that Miranda started losing her teeth and her breastbone was enlarging. They assumed it was apart of their experiment and carried on. Semi also wondered why nothing was happening to her and why Dr. Franklin was always upset with her test results.
A couple days later after Miranda's body started changing rapidly, they took Miranda away. Semi felt upset and worried but stayed optimistic. She kept the thoughts of breaking out and escaping.
A few days later, Semi's body started changing. It was getting harder for her to breathe. Later that week, Semi woke up from a deep sleep feeling fine. She was floating in water. She looked up and saw a big bird. She knew it was Miranda. She tried yelling to her but nothing came out. She had no voice. Semi's legs and arms were gone, and Semi felt helpless. Suddenly, Semi blacked out.

CHAPTER 6.

While in the prison cells, Semi and Miranda are woken up in the middle of the night by Dr. Skinner, Dr. Franklin's assistant. He tells them to follow him. They learn that he is trying to help the two escape. While escaping he tells them directions to go once they get off of the property. Suddenly, they are stopped by Dr. Franklin and his guards. Thinking that they could still escape, Semi runs for the fence, but is stopped by the guards. After kicking, screaming and biting, the two become unconscious.
The two girls wake up, back in the prison cell. They learn they are in straitjackets and are unable to move. Trying to get their mind off the fact that they are trapped, they decide to discuss the animals they would want to become. Miranda says she wants to become a valuable parrot and to be able to fly and travel. Semi says she would want to become some sort of fish in the Carribean so she could find pirate's treasure and be warm under the sun.
Later, the two think that Arnie is still with them. Semi is doubtful of that idea because they found his machete lying on the ground. Trying to keep their hopes up, they think that Arnie is still alive with them on the island still.

Pages 1-26 *Alyssa*

My group and I are reading Dr. Franklin's Island by Ann Halam, and we just read the first twenty-six pages of this book. So far, it's really interesting. It's about a "chubby and shy" girl named Semirah Garson, who people just call Semi. She was a prizewinner to go on a plane with thirty other people to go to a science lab, instead of going to Jamaica with her family. However, her plane gets into a tragic crash. Semi, Miranda, and Arnie are all now stuck on an unknown island after swimming for their lives.
